Tess Gerritsen started out as an MD, but after giving birth she decided to become a full time writer. She started out as a romance writer, and progressed into suspense/mystery. Her first suspense novel, The Surgeon, won a RITA (Romance Writers of America) for best romance suspense in 2001. The Surgeon introduced her star character Jane Rizzoli. Since then Gerritsen has written six more books in the series.
