Bleeding Heart by Martha Powers

Martha Powers wrote seven romance novels prior to turning her pen to mysteries.  She has written four mysteries – Bleeding Heart, Sunflower, Death Angel, and Conspiracy of Silence.   Bleeding Heart was her first mystery.  It is set in the small town of Delbrook, Wisconsin.

Maggie Collier has moved to Delbrook with her preteen son, Jake.  Two years before Maggie’s husband died in a car crash, and they moved to Delbrook to live near her father-in-law, George.  Jake and Maggie are recovering from their loss and settling into a normal routine, when George is murdered.

The police blame the local homeless man, Tully Jackson, but a lawyer from Chicago, Grant, shows up with a story connecting the murder to a series of child abductions.  George’s friend, Ham, also comes up from Chicago to help solve the murder.  The book has several twists and turns with a surprise ending.

I have now read all four of Martha Power’s mysteries.    With each book the quality of the writing has improved.    Her latest book Conspiracy of Silence is her best book, and I highly recommend it.  On the other hand, Bleeding Heart was a difficult read.  The ending was good, the story line was good, but getting to the ending was laborious.
