Seize the Book

Bahamarama by Bob Morris

Bob Morris, a Florida author, writes mysteries set in the Caribbean and Florida. His books generally have catchy titles such as Bahamarama and Bermuda Schwartz.   He is a former newspaper columnist, and has served as an editor on Aqua, Caribbean Travel Life, and Gulf Shore Life.   He has also published articles in Geographic Traveler, Islands, and Bon Appétit.  As such, his travels throughout the Caribbean provide an expertise for the settings of his stories.   His books are entertaining, and enjoyable.   They are not rife with violence, blood, gore, and sex.

His main protagonist, Zack Chasteen, played football for the University of Florida and the Miami Dolphins before becoming a charter boat captain.   His career as a boat captain became waylaid after he was falsely convicted of forgery, and served two years in prison.

In his first caper, Bahamarama, Zack has been released from prison, and is ready to get on with his life.   That includes getting back together with his girlfriend, Barbara Pickering, who owns several Caribbean travel magazines.  She is currently supervising a photo shoot on Harbour Island in the North Eleuthera chain of islands, the Bahamas.

Before Zack has the opportunity to join Barbara, they run into all kinds of misfortune.   Zack went to prison for a crime he didn’t commit.  A Cuban gangster, Victor Ortiz actually committed the crime. Victor is now back in Zack’s life, and causing complications.  Barbara is kidnapped, and Zack works with the Harbour Island police to get her back.

Bahamarama begins a new mystery series set in the Caribbean with all the essential characters and ephemera.   The eccentric British colonialists, Lord Downey, and his daughter Burma add color and content to the story.  Morris’ island background adds authenticity to the setting.  His description of the flora, fauna, and local inhabitants is right on target.  Morris also seems to have a discriminating taste for island liquors.   Don’t miss this series by Bob Morris.
